About Kingdom Planning

The Story Behind Kingdom Planning

Many leaders carry enormous responsibility while navigating uncertainty, growing demands, and limited margin for reflection. Important questions often remain unspoken until strain becomes visible. Kingdom Planning exists to create space for thoughtful leadership before pressure turns into crisis.

Joshua Updegraff grew up attending an influential church in the greater Pittsburgh area. Faith was always present in his life, but in 2010 he began to truly take ownership of it personally. What followed were years of spiritual growth and deeper involvement in ministry, serving regularly in youth ministry and on worship teams. Those experiences provided a close view of the dedication, responsibility, and pressure that ministry leaders carry every week. They also revealed something important: many of the most faithful leaders in the Church are navigating complex organizational challenges while still trying to care well for the people they serve.

During that time a close friend he had lost contact with for nearly five years reached out and invited him to a young adults gathering. That invitation led to Joshua meeting the woman who would become his wife. After six months of dating they became engaged, and in 2023 they were married. Experiences like these reinforced something Joshua had already begun to notice. God often works through ordinary moments and unexpected connections. And faithful leaders, in the Church and in life, are often the ones who create space for those moments to happen.

In 2025, through several conversations and a growing sense of calling, a deeper realization emerged. The Church is filled with leaders who love their people and care deeply about the mission God has entrusted to them. Yet many of those leaders are carrying enormous responsibility without structured ways to identify risks early, clarify leadership alignment, or respond thoughtfully before problems grow.

Risk management can sound technical or corporate. Applied with care and wisdom, it becomes an act of stewardship.

Protecting people. Protecting mission. Protecting the long-term health of the Church. Kingdom Planning was created to serve the Church in that way.

Why This Matters

Many leadership teams do not struggle because they lack passion or commitment. They struggle because the pace of ministry leaves little space to step back and examine what may be quietly building beneath the surface. Unclear responsibilities, overextended staff, financial pressures, volunteer burnout, or difficult conversations that keep getting postponed can slowly accumulate. These pressures rarely begin as crises. They begin as small signals that are easy to overlook when leaders are focused on serving people and moving the mission forward. Kingdom Planning helps leadership teams pause long enough to notice those signals and create thoughtful responses before strain grows into something more difficult to navigate.

What We Do

Kingdom Planning supports leaders by helping them uncover risks they may not yet see, clarify how much risk they are willing and able to carry, and establish early warning signals that prompt action before damage occurs. This includes identifying hidden or emerging risks, clarifying risk tolerances and threshold boundaries, creating space for thoughtful decision making, and aligning leadership teams around shared understanding and responsibility.

We work alongside leaders through facilitated team conversations, one-on-one leadership consultations, and executive roundtables. These environments are designed to surface concerns safely, reduce ambiguity, and strengthen alignment across leadership teams. The goal is not control or prediction. The goal is clarity, steadiness, and shared understanding.

Our Approach

Kingdom Planning does not replace discernment, prayer, or leadership responsibility. We help leaders think more clearly so they can lead more faithfully. We believe clarity reduces fear. We believe early signals matter more than late solutions. We believe faithful leadership is thoughtful rather than reactive, and that stewardship means building margin rather than simply enduring pressure.

Kingdom Planning does not come to evaluate or control your ministry. We come alongside leaders who love the Church and want help thinking clearly about the pressures they are carrying.

Who We Serve

We primarily serve churches and faith-based organizations, mission-driven nonprofits, and leaders navigating growth, transition, or uncertainty. If your leadership team feels stretched, reactive, or uncertain about what risks matter most, Kingdom Planning provides space and structure to help you move forward with confidence and care.

Our Foundation

Kingdom Planning is rooted in Christian faith and guided by biblical principles of stewardship, wisdom, and servant leadership. Our work is shaped by Christ-centered values while remaining practical, respectful, and accessible to diverse leadership teams. We are anchored in Proverbs 22:3 which states, “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” â€‹

An Invitation

If you lead a church or mission-driven organization and sense that your leadership team may be carrying more pressure than it should, we would be honored to support you. Your first consultation is simply a conversation. It is an opportunity to explore what pressures your leadership team may be navigating and whether Kingdom Planning could be helpful. You do not have to have it all figured out before you reach out. That is exactly what the conversation is for.
